Ambulatory Veterinary Assistant

Location: South Elgin, Illinois
Position: Part-Time, 2–3 days per week (A full time position could be a possibility for the right candidate), $17 - 24 per hour; Although not required, veterinary or equine veterinary assistant experience and conversational Spanish are items that will positively affect initial compensation.

We are currently seeing an experienced horse person to join our ambulatory practice as an Ambulatory Veterinary Assistant.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Horse handling; including jogging for lameness exams and restraint for procedures.

  • Preparation and assisting during exams and procedures, such as scrubbing joints prior to injections and holding radiograph equipment.  

 Secondary Job Duties (will increase with time and experience):

  • Maintaining inventory of the ambulatory vehicle, assisting office manager in maintaining office inventory, and light cleaning of the ambulatory vehicle and office.

  • Laboratory sample handling and processing/labeling for courier pickup.

  • Use of medical records software; including billing. Billing will be shared between office manager, veterinarian and veterinary assistant.

Requirements: An applicant should have horse experience, be comfortable handling and holding horses, be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds, have the ability and desire to learn and understand medical terminology, strong attention to detail, have computer and communication skills. An applicant must be 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license/clean driving record.  Applicants may be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Work Environment:

  • October through April we are a 100% ambulatory practice.

  • May through September we combine ambulatory practice with ongrounds veterinary practice at the HITS Chicago Hunter/Jumper and Dressage shows at Lamplight Equestrian Center, Wayne, Illinois. Ambulatory appointments are typically scheduled for Monday and Tuesdays, and weeks between shows when we are not the show grounds.

  • While attempts are made to schedule appointments for a balanced workday, there are days that will start early and end late.

Veterinary and Pre-Veterinary Externship

Available year round to veterinary and Pre-veterinary students. The externship will give students exposure and involvement in equine ambulatory and horse show veterinary cases. Duration is typically 1 to 3 weeks. Seasonally, one day a week opportunities can be arranged. Candidate must be 18 years old and have prior horse experience.

Summer Student - 2027

Position: Full or Part-Time (2 day minimum), multiple positions available. We offer a competitive wage based on experience, starting from $16 - 20 per hour.

Horse Show /Sports Medicine Veterinary Medicine Fellowship (4 months)

Location: South Elgin, Illinois
Position: Full time Veterinary Fellowship
Anticipated Start Date: June - September 2027.

Primary Job Description: This position is a seasonal, ideally post-internship position, aimed at increasing a veterinarians experience within the field of Sports Medicine, Lameness, and Horse Show Veterinary Medicine. Position is designed to help veterinarian grow professionally through daily exposure to sports medicine cases and their management. Illinois veterinary licensure is recommended but not required.

  • Assisting in performing veterinary services at Hunter/Jumper/Dressage horse shows and during ambulatory calls.

  • Limited/occasional shared on-call responsibilities

Salary: Commensurate with experience and industry averages for second internship/fellowship. Housing can potentially be included in compensation package.
